National Night Out

This past week, I had a fantastic time at the National Nights Out hosted by police departments in Berks County!

It was great to see so many of our neighbors come together for an evening focused on community and safety.

A huge thank you to the Lower Heidelburg, South Heidelburg, Sinking Spring, Bern Township, Northern Berks, Fleetwood, Tilden and Hamburg police departments that hosted the events. Their commitment to building strong relationships with the communities they serve is what makes Berks County such a wonderful place to live.

These events are a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together. Let's continue to support one another and build a safer, more connected environment for everyone.
Welcoming New Berks County PFBC Officers

Last week, I had the honor of meeting and welcoming two new waterways conservation officers assigned to regions in Berks County!

Officer Jenna Alleman and Officer Hunter Sanner recently graduated from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's rigorous 49-week program in July and will serve here in Berks County!

Thank you for your dedication and service to Pennsylvania and Berks County!
Berks County Conservation District Awards and Scholarship Dinner

It was a pleasure to attend the Berks County Conservation District's Annual Awards and Scholarship Dinner at the Oley Fairgrounds.

I'd like to extend my congratulations to this year's winners from the 5th legislative district, including Oscar and Sandy Manbeck for winning the Farm of the Year Award and Schuylkill Valley FFA for winning Student Environmental Organization of the Year. Thank you all for your dedicated work in agriculture and conservation in Pennsylvania.
New Law Targets Drug Overdose Response

I recently voted in support of a new state law to enhance drug overdose reporting and response to combat this ongoing epidemic.

Act 18 of 2025 will ensure emergency medical services (EMS) providers are fully integrated into Pennsylvania’s overdose surveillance systems, enabling faster, more accurate data sharing across agencies. By improving real-time coordination, Act 18 strengthens our ability to respond to overdoses and save lives.

The law will take effect at the end of the year.
Celebrating Agriculture at Ag Progress Days

Penn State’s Ag Progress Days, the Commonwealth’s largest outdoor agricultural exposition, will be held this week, from Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 12-14, at the Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research Center, 2710 W. Pine Grove Road in Pennsylvania Furnace.

The event is hosted by Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences and showcases educational programs, current research, and the latest innovations in agricultural equipment and technology. It features more than 400 exhibitors from the United States and Canada.

Call Before You Dig

Today marks National 811 Day – a day dedicated to reminding residents, contractors and utility workers of the importance of calling 8-1-1 before digging to help ensure the safety of excavation projects across the state.

Every time an underground utility line is hit, there is a risk to the contractors or homeowners who are doing the digging; to utility workers and emergency responders who are mobilized to deal with the damage; and to bystanders who live, work or travel near the locations of the incidents.

State law requires contractors and residents to contact PA One Call at least three business days prior to excavation – triggering alerts to all utilities within an intended digging area and prompting utilities to mark where their facilities are located. Pennsylvanians can dial 8-1-1 to connect with the One Call system, while out-of-state residents or businesses can call 1-800-242-1776.

ATV, Snowmobile Grant Program Taking Applications

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Recreation and Conservation recently announced it is accepting applications for the All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and Snowmobile Program’s fall grant round.

The program awards grants from the ATV and Snowmobile Management Restricted Accounts for projects proposing land acquisition, planning, development, rehabilitation, maintenance, equipment purchase or educational programs.

Eligible applicants include for-profit organizations, nonprofit organizations, and counties and municipalities in the Commonwealth.

Proposals must be submitted via DCNR’s online grant application portal  no later than 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30. Click here for additional information.
DMAP Permits Available Starting Monday

The third round of antlerless deer license sales kicked off at 8 a.m. on today, which also marks the first opportunity for hunters to pick up their Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) permits.

DMAP permits are used to harvest an antlerless deer on the specific property for which the permit is issued. For some properties, DMAP permits are available to purchase directly, online or at an issuing agent, and hunters may purchase up to two permits per property. For other properties, a hunter must first obtain between one and four coupons from the landowner, then redeem them to purchase their DMAP permits.

Each DMAP permit costs $10.97 for residents and $35.97 for nonresidents.

According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, antlerless deer licenses also remain available in most WMUs. With the third round of sales beginning, hunters who already have bought two antlerless licenses can pick up a third, or hunters who have not yet gotten a license can purchase up to three.
